The BMI is Ridiculous!

December 11, 2007

A quick google search confirms that this has been said by too many people already, but the BMI is ridiculous! Why? Because it’s nearly impossible for me to be “overweight”, i.e. to have a BMI over 25. I eat all the time and I eat unhealthy, fatty foods, but to no avail. I can’t gain enough weight for it to be official.

Well, I don’t care what they say; I will still consider my ideal weight to be 135 lbs. Since I am 5’6″ tall, the BMI says I could weigh 154 lbs and still be “normal”, but I’m not buying it.

By the way, as a reasonable person, I should admit that the BMI isn’t ridiculous, they just mis-named the categories in an effort to be understandable. All the google hits I saw make a big deal about how it calls people “overweight” who aren’t really overweight, and people “obese” who aren’t really obese. These are just statistical claims, though, describing broad attributes of the group of people with BMI between 25-30, or >30. It’s not intended to make any claim about your ideal weight or what “looks good”.

So in conclusion, I really shouldn’t be blaming the BMI for not telling me how much I should weigh. That’s like blaming litmus paper for not telling me whether orange juice tastes good.
