Lolita

April 18, 2008

I’m slowly reading Lolita. It’s well-written, but Nabokov is almost too good a writer to actually read. His novels seem more like exercises in self-absorbedness than attempts at telling stories. Still, for some reason I really like him. My favorite lines so far:

All at once we were madly, clumsily, shamelessly, agonizingly in love with each other; hopelessly, I might add, because that frenzy of mutual possession might have been assuaged only by our actually imbibing and assimilating every particle of each other’s soul and flesh
