Libertarian Pornography

April 6, 2009

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.

-H.L. Mencken

Please understand that I don’t want to write posts like these, but I did take Obama’s pledge to stop federal raids on medical marijuana dispensaries as serious evidence in favor of Dan’s position that there really is a big difference between the Democrats and Republicans, and government is not simply about satisfying the most powerful special interests, as I often allege.

Dan is still probably more right than I am on this point, but stories like this one do keep my doubts alive.

  1. Dan Says:

They may actually have not paid their taxes, which is illegal, whether one agrees with that or not. Plus, this is one case following a new policy, perhaps we could wait for a few more cases before jumping to the conclusion that the policy has been reversed.

I doubt if Obama sent the raid order in on his Blackberry during his tea with the Queen. He probably had nothing to do with this actual decision. Obama may have signed off on the policy that the Feds would not raid these dispensaries unless they violated state law, which is progress. How that is implemented is up to law enforcement agencies like the DEA, whose job it is to lock up criminals. The changes in the DEA from Republican to Democratic administrations is probably minimal, by design. That Obama acted to check their overreaching on drug policy in any way is impressive. Look at his new drug czar and Hillary’s remarks in Mexico for signs of a different approach to drug abuse.

There are promising signs so far, don’t jump off a bridge just because they haven’t gone entirely smoothly in the first 100 days.

  2. Agreed. There wasn’t much to this post except that you’re wrong if you think everything in politics is all or nothing. Fortunately, nobody thinks that.

Obama is about as good or better than could be expected on drug policy. I was kind of mad at him for the marijuana jokes the other night, but what was he gonna say? Yes it’s nice what Hillary said, but I’m still waiting to see how speech translates into action.

The tax thing seems a funny justification, but I’m not going to be jumping off any bridges.
